That's really ancient stuff at this point. Instead of buying new hardware try upgrading that distro first.

Cowanon, you should be able to run at least kernel 6.8 an i7-4xxx. I've had strange issues with 6.9 and 6.10 on a few of my older HPs and on an Asus laptop.
Are you running debian or arch?

That's a double upgrade. He'd have to upgrade to 11 first. It's not hard. I'd back up the home directory just to be safe.

He's running MX which I understand is based off deb stable. The latest MX looks like its built on Debian 12 so there is no reason not to upgrade

I keep my builds as bleeding edge as possible. Updating the apt lists to a new build and updating and upgrading always makes me nervous. As long as the apt update goes fine, upgrading should be fine too. Debian 12 will run on that machine.

Yeah to be honest I would suggest only moderate upgrades to that machine anyway. He could find a deal on a 20 series nividia (for sure a 10 series) and get a bigger SSD. Seriosuly, 1TB 2.5" SSDs are sub $100 now. Those two things plus some recent software and he'll be living in the future

Also, and just so cowanon knows to look at it... I recall that debian changed the name of its security repository at 11 or 12. So be sure to check that.
