      @ryanc when optics used to cost 10 grand, you would want to percisely tune DB levels so you don't "burn out" your receivers.

      When I can Get 10G BiDi from amazon for $50... SEND IT

      @kajer I was a little worried about using optics rated for 2km for a link that's maybe 50 meters, lol.

      Also, I have six pairs from the MDF to my office, that's probably enough right?

      @ryanc Check the sfp-rx-power shown is within the maximum receive levels of your SFP used — otherwise, sure.

      For a typical 2km transceiver, those values are perfectly good.

      @ryanc you can get more by using Bidirectional optics. I have a 2 strand fiber ran at #campkajer, you saw it, and I use 2 pairs of BiDi for a 20Gb/s LACP

      @ryanc @kajer My understanding is that pretty much all 2km or less optics are rated to receive their full transmit power. When you get above that, you would need to look at the spec sheet and concider if an attenuator is required.

      @chaz @ryanc @kajer 10km LR optics are also safe without attenuators.

      I ran OS2 fiber in my house badly enough that 2km doesn’t cut it for all the links (and they’re under the floor so not going to get redone any time soon). Luckily I could just brute force the link with a 20km optic just fine 😅🥴

      @astrid @ryanc indeed! most transceivers have some protection against operating at high powers without a bidirectional link, but I would _NOT_ recommend going anywhere near the fiber with your eyes on a high power transceiver.

      the 0dBm of your transceiver is about 1mW, which is still eye-safe (still don't do it!), anything above that is getting seriously dangerous!

      @ryanc fs optics come with pretty nice PDF datasheets, always worth having a look into.

      Basically the only thing you don't want to do is to connect 60km optics with a meter of cable, or you'll blow the receiver out of the other end :)
