   It's great to see someone FINALLY mention the magnetosphere issue, in the very first sentence no less, but this article rips into the idea so much more thoroughly than that, and with admirable gusto.

     @anandamide FUD. We don't need a low-cost plan for anything on mars, including shielding inhabitants from radiation. High cost plans are fine, and should be done as soon as feasible.
     
     These are all real problems but we are not colonizing mars because it is easy. We are colonizing mars because it's an obvious next hop after a lunar base.

     @anandamide incidentally, the 'living a freezer' isn't that much different than living in this area of canada, only we get a (small) growing season where it isn't that cold.
