Going to just hook my computer directly to my 80s amp with aux to rca to listen to more than my vinyl collection

With today's tech, aux is fine for listening.

Depends maybe of the computer. I got a late 2014 iMac. I think it can provide good enough sound

I used to use DACS but now think it’s just a waste of money

@barber I got very good speakers and a very good amp but I think my 2014 late iMac is good enough. I had a 1000 euro Cambridge audio DAC that is broken. I just don't think I will hear a difference from my iMac. I usually listen to vinyl

You could just buy a common usb audio interface, like a focusrite or presonus. I use an old presonus audio box. It was plug and play.

@Diceyocean Your computer has a DAC in it that processes the digital source then converts it to analog before it outputs through the aux. If you don't have high end revealing speakers and you're just playing mp3 files, YouTube or Spotify music through your computer, you most likely won't notice any difference. If you ever decide you want an inexpensive DAC with decent sound, get an SMSL SU-1 for $80

@Humpleupagus @barber maybe I could. But I won’t. I will just hook it directly up. Aux to rca arrives tomorrow before 1 pm. I no longer believe in DAC’s if I had a 300 dollar computer I would never hook it up. The imac has a good enough dac in my opinion

I just happened to have that box laying around and wasn't using it, so I was like... why not? I wouldn't have bought it for that purpose, but it is an option.

Just buy one of these and you can have as many speakers as you want.

There's definitely a law of diminishing returns that applies when it comes to spending money on stereo equipment. Especially with a DAC. I mostly stick with vintage gear and repair what I can. I've found it's the best bang for the buck. It helps that a lot of my stuff has been given to me by my customers

@Humpleupagus @barber I used to be of audiophile mindset. But now I am just a connoisseur knowing what amp sounds good and speakers from listening and not looking at price to form my opinion like all audiophile do

Yeah. I have a lot of gear and cpus from over the years. It's nice to get free stuff. I actually picked up three free hp pro desk i5-4xxx last year from a friend. A lot of other stuff too. People know I collect and refurbish electronics.

@barber @Humpleupagus I got a old 80 amps pioneer that was crafted for vinyl which is what I mostly listen too. It sounds better with records than modern amps

My dad has the matching pair. He bought them in the 70s for his quadraphonic stereo.

I can stream mpd over pulse into any room in my house now with my extra cpu equipment. I just have to wol the cpu and change the mpd output.

@barber @Diceyocean @Humpleupagus free audio gear is the best audio gear
i yoinked a really nice receiver from the e-waste at work that accepts optical output from my PC, completely negating whatever goofy ass ground loop problem my old one had
some day i swear i'll put the 70 volt amp and speakers i yoinked from a commercial building in my garage

@skylar @Humpleupagus @barber I got my old amp for like 20 euros it sells for over 200. And it works like new. Thing with these old amps you can't price them for the feeling they give when listening. It's another sonic experience

You really don't need anything about 44.1 for playback, and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't understand digital audio conversion and frequency ranges.

Since your iMac is kinda old, did you have to change your Qobuz output settings or will it process 24/192?
-

@barber @Humpleupagus @skylar just 96 khz 24 bit

@Humpleupagus @skylar @barber I don't really need above that either

Digital mixing with multiple passes may need higher sample rates due to artifacting, but it takes a lot for those to become a real problem.

@Humpleupagus @skylar @barber just some of those high res remasters are very nicely remastered

Yeah that's what I've noticed on Qobuz, that the hi res tracks are different masters but 96 should still be fine on the 192 tracks. The hi res tracks don't always sound better than the hi-res ones though. The Who "Tommy" album is a good example of this. They use a different mastering on the CD quality version of it and it sounds better than the hi-res version

I need to get back in the studio. I've been busy af, and it's been over a month. I did have three days set aside at the end of August / beginning of September, but I got a sinus infection that put me on my ass and gave me a black eye. I'm still recovering. My eye still hurts and headaches come and go. It should only be a few more days though.

The older I get, the less I want to fiddle with records and the more I want to play my CDs. Used CDs are actually the best bang for the buck right now. They're out of fashion

My redbook CDs (44.1) played in my CD player through the same system I stream through sound better than the same hi-res tracks when I stream them on Qobuz and they're at 96 and 192 most of the time. For whatever reason, on Qobuz, the hi-res versions do usually sound better than the lower res versions do though

Bizarrely, I got it right after watching fight club. 😒
I just have the residuals now. I'm not as young as I once was. Healing takes a while.
