Wait a minute, what happened between 1938 and 1990? Did the SS take over the village, and then the Stasi? Why is there a silent gap?

A friend showed me a picture from one of the hotels. They have a wall with memorial plaques: In 1937 this famous person visited, in 1938 that famous person visited ... umm, in 2006 the Swedish Queen visited, and then in 2007 this other person ...

Was the hotel renovated from top secret site back to tourist hotel between 1990 and 2006? Had it fallen into disrepair from lack of tourism during the DDR?

Does anyone here from Vorpommern know something?

@clacke The page for the island of Usedom suggests that while tourism was important 1945-1990 it took place in the context of all facilities being run from off-island VEBs and with many military facilities on the island. Likely meaning whoever was allowed to stay there was tightly controlled? With no 'celebs' from anywhere. And probably also means an absence of statistics.

@clacke volkseigene Betriebe, iow gov owned enterprises. Who, in my reading of that page would send staff and their families there to holiday as a perk.
