That last part! I’ll •only• reading the comments here without actually watching the debate. Even when Trump isn’t involved, I find these things intolerable for many of the same reasons I can’t stand most reality TV. But I love the shared joy, the shared commiseration, and the wit of everyone’s posts.

I agree that there's little to be gained from the debate. As a citizen I think it's -EVBut I'll be watching it anyway because the shared experience of MST3K'ing the circus part of "bread and circuses" has some value to me. Some of the live commentary here on Mastodon during these events is entertaining
[Again, that's the consumer in me talking, not the citizen]

I'm curious what sort of people *will* be watching? In theory "the American people" will tune in to get to know Harris better and see what Trump does. It's supposed to be a big event but is anyone really looking forward to it?
Sadly I think what will matter most is that Harris never look 'rattled' that she projects total confidence and calm.

Calling everyone he dislikes a communist happens so often it's hardly worth mentioning. He claims that he won an election he lost, that the nation is going to hell, that "migrant crime" has us all cowering in our homes.
I find myself agreeing with those who say there isn't much to be gained from a "debate" --you can't debate the counterfactual.

What the hell is wrong with our country?"
Trump has made this kind of claim multiple times. It is not a joke, he either thinks this happens or thinks he can convince people it happens.
How do you even respond to such nonsense?
