Confession: I haven’t actually seen a modern desktop GPU that was released in the last three years, up close and in person. Until today.
Holy crap these are massive now! (Cassette tape for scale)

@killyourfm Does that mean you usually stick to laptops or prebuilt desktops?
@ProfessorCode Well, traditionally I have been a desktop guy, whether that's prebuilt or DIY. But during my time at Mozilla I just used laptops. This is the first modern prebuilt desktop I've touched in about 4 years.
@killyourfm yeah modern high end GPUs are... Oversized. It's gotten a bit ridiculous. Personally I'm not going to buy a new PC case just to fit a video card haha.
I figure these RGBs give me at least an extra 15fps at 4K.
@necrophcodr Yea, it's jarring when the conventional wisdom has always been "tech gets smaller" lol.
I miss building mini-ITX systems with small footprints like this (from one of my DIY build articles in 2015).
@raptor85 OK now I have to seek out a side-by-side 4090 air/liquid cooled comparison.
@killyourfm it's mostly heat-sink and fans, cpu ones are massive now too. I have the water cooled version of the 4090 and it's far more reasonably sized, about the same size as my old 960, only takes up one slot and doesn't require a longer case (you can still fit drive bays/etc in front of it)
@plwt *Soundwave glances down briefly at the inferior technology and resumes his quest for more Energon*
@killyourfm How else are you going to be able to hack the Gibson?
Hopefully Soundwave approves...?
@raptor85 My first question is why they can't spell Supreme properly. (I do appreciate the comparison, thank you for that.)
@killyourfm
They make my exact card both air/liquid cooled (the 4090 suprim 24G by MSI)
Air Cooled: 336x142x78mm
Liquid: 280x140x43mm
basically it's considerably shorter and almost half as thick.
granted the liquid does obviously use an external radiator similar to the cpu one (they're actually pretty much the exact same), mine I replaced two of my three front fans with the radiator setup.
@killyourfm It has been a shock. I went from a triple fan 3070 to the 6900XT.
@OptiplexPrime wow! I had a 6800 XT and I don’t remember it being a chunky boy like that.
But yeah, GPU size is getting out of control
@micahbp I'm reviewing the new HP Omen 35L at Forbes. It has Windows on it now, but I'm planning to put a couple Linux distros on it as well.
@killyourfm Is that a new machine your testing for review or something? Or is it a primary machine of yours? What OS is it running too?😁
@jlin It's way, way above the craftsmanship I would expect from a brand like HP. It looks and feels very premium. Even the cable management is immaculate. Very impressed so far!
(Less so by the bloatware included though -- McAfee, etc)
@killyourfm that's a nice looking computer
