So. I’ve just ordered an Android tablet (don’t look so shocked). I’ve gone with the Samsung A9+ with 8GB RAM. It seemed to be the best on the market at a low price. ~£239

The price is important, because if I wanted a good tablet, I’d use my iPad. But my iPad cost 2k, and my MacBook cost even more. If I wanted a cheap iPad, I’d just buy and iPad, which start at 349.

I wanted something for travelling that I could watch TV on and not worry about if it got stolen or damaged. No ‘personal’ use as such. But also be able to do the things my iOS devices can’t. The more hacky, maker, tinkerer things that I shouldn’t be doing on my secure devices.

Now, Android peeps. I need some advice on clearing out crap like services and telemetry and all the Samsung bloat.

Are there tools I can sideload for this? Or any good resources?

Input welcome! It’s a bit of an alien world for me because Android just isn’t deployed in enterprise circles for obvious reasons. But I’m happy to learn!

@SecurityWriter TBH I've never found a very good way to clear the bloat without rooting the phone. There are loads of ROM images out there, but IMHO the best option is to install a completely vanilla Android and only add the services you want.

@noodlejetski @SecurityWriter it isn't universal, but most of the mainstream devices have vanilla Android images available. Sadly there is no perfect solution.

@kevie @SecurityWriter sadly that's not viable on all devices, and the custom ROM availability isn't that great when it comes to Samsung ones, but it's always worth trying out
