@egg@BeAware not really! I've just deleted one more account from another instance and here I don't see as many people and posts as I've seen there. Given that my hashtags are not very popular it leaves with close to nothin. Just following random real people I can find :)
@zimowski@egg to be fair, there's no algorithm here. I'm sure you know since you've been here so long, but I figured I'd mention it, since egg said algorithmic.
There's a lot of topics that aren't discussed here and that is very unfortunate.
Though, in that regard, I'd advise to be patient, Threads is in the process of federating and I'm willing to bet that by the beginning of next year, there will be a whole ton of new folks to discuss different topics with.
I should ask, how do you interact with mastodon? Do you have the official app on your phone or tablet? Or are you using the web? There's also many third party apps that are way better than the official one in a lot of ways.
@zimowski well, in regards to the big corporations being gatekept, theres 20,000+ instances here and I'd say about 1-2k MIGHT block them. However a ton of instances have their blocklist private so the only known amount is around 800. They'll never be fully locked out due to the way the network is.
Yesterday, I even had a threads user take a screenshot and make his own post saying "Meta needs to hurry up, I wanna banter!" Because they cannot mention us directly yet. It was pretty neat, but they're working on it.
As for the official app being trash, what mobile device do you have, iOS or android? I can recommend some really good third party apps on each platform if you'd like. It may be a better experience for you.
@BeAware I remember there was the whole scandal that bluesky and threads shouldn't be a part of the network because some people here wanted to gatekeep bigger corporations. Good to know that they didn't succeed
I use web version on my PC, it's the best way, because the official app is just really bad :)
@zimowski you say that, but you're distraught about finding people and these apps can sometimes make it easier.
It's totally up to you, but I use IceCubesApp and Ivory regularly. The former is free, the latter requires a small subscription fee.
There's also Mona, which is not my taste but it has a feature that these don't. It lets you "view profile/post from original server", which will allow you to see their old posts and replies to posts right within the app. I think it could be good for you. Though, it needs a one time purchase of around $11 to take full advantage, but it might be worth it.
Just figured I'd offer some options, in case you're curious about how a *good* mastodon app looks and feels.
