erm. i think you'll find that atheism also relies on unproven axioms. ☝️🤓

I use to go to this atheist bruch on Sundays yonks ago. My friend Eric said, "I hate it when people say Atheism is a religion."

      "Atheism is a religion"

"It doesn't bother me when you say it."

      "Doesn't that prove the point?"

@jesopo yeah I've heard that before

one group beliefs in invisible magic.
the other says they will only believe in such things when evidence warrants such belief.

One of these groups require less on unproven axioms

ah yes, the arrogance of New Atheism. It acts as if it's a religion in so many ways, but a real religion needs to address questions about life, death and purpose. I suppose New Atheism does address those questions, but often it is with some type of Nihilism.

Now back in 2019, I wrote about how nihilism is often misunderstood, but looking back at that work, nihilism might only be beneficial as a philosophy to those who can see the "I can radically chose, therefore I am radically free" side of it. But for others, it easily descended into fatalism. All of that also combines very uncomfortably with moral relativism.

I'm not religious and I do not believe in Jesus and the saints and all the prophets. I think most modern day Christians do not understand how Christianity from 300 AD would be unrecognizable to them. Still, despite its changes and evolution, it did eventually provide the basis for British Common Law and the moral foundations of western civilization. Atheists who cannot understand that are high off their own hubris.
