🤔 Fascists love Star Wars. Even though the whole point of Star Wars is that fascists suck, and that the universe would be better without them.

🤔 Billionaires love Star Trek. Even though the whole point of Star Trek is that billionaires suck, and that the universe would be better off without them, and that once we get universal basic income and solve SF homelessness, and end the very concept of billionaire, humanity will usher in a real age of technological advancement.

@mekkaokereke As a general rule the more antifascist someone claims to be the more fascist they are in reality. This doesnt surprise me in the least.

I don't think it's a matter of understanding, it's a matter of identification. I recall when I was a kid, long before I learned about neurodivergence, I identified with Spock and didn't get when he was the butt of the jokes. one can also watch african wilderness documentaries and root for the crocodile to catch the gnu, or for the gnu to escape. I guess fascists and billionaires get what's going on in those movies and series just fine, it's just that they identify with the crocodiles rather than with the gnus, and maybe they don't realize that the criticism is aimed at them

@mekkaokereke They might say that they like Star Wars, Star Trek, The Culture, The Expanse, The Matrix, Robocop, Terminator, The Lord of the Rings, etc.

But they continue to demonstrate that they did not understand those works.

Even when the authors of the works have explained them (per the Wachowskis telling off Elon Musk).

Which makes me wonder if they actually watched or read or listened to them - or paid attention if they did.

@kboyd @mekkaokereke the protomolecule, like climate change, does not care if you're a billionaire

I don't think it's a messed up future; I think it's a plausible future. If it becomes economical enough to operate in space like that with humans and have an entire industry devoted to dangerous asteroid mining jobs which also destroy your health as a side effect we will have the poorest people doing those jobs. That's how our lives work today.

@mekkaokereke Jeff Bezos loves The Expanse.

A messed up future where billionaires play with entire settled worlds as though they are meaningless toys.

Where even the Secretary General of Earth is an underdog in the fight against their machinations.

@feld @mekkaokereke that's why I said it was messed up. It's a completely plausible translation of our current status quo to several hundred years in the future. From a star trek perspective, that's messed up.

Especially because of the Company Town concept being adapted to space.

Rather than taking star trek's hopeful-utopia approach, The Expanse inspires hope from the grass roots. Earthers, Belters, and Martians coming together to intentionally make the world a better place.

      (Except Duarte.)

@kboyd @mekkaokereke Star Trek is a utopia that will never exist, so it's not fair to compare against IMO 🙃
