How accurate is this?Mastodon is one of many pieces of software made to interface with the Fediverse which is a type decentralized social media. There's Pleroma, Misskey, Soapbox and their numerous forks which comprise the most popularly used server software for spinning up your own fediverse instance. Mastodon is one such piece of Fediverse software which makes up the 'Mastodon network'. The Mastodon network is a sort of inner circle within the Fediverse which is comprised solely of Mastodon servers for various interests and niches.
Beyond that inner circle is what they refer to as the 'Alt Fedi' or 'Alternative Fediverse'. Which is more or less every other Fediverse instance that isn't Mastodon which also uses the ActivityPub protocol to federate with other servers on the decentralized network that is the Fediverse. Alt Fedi, or sometimes referred to as 'Dark fedi' is often characteristics as the wild west of fediverse instances where anything within reason goes.
You'll sometimes find marginalized groups that aren't part of the Mastodon network which use other fediverse software like Misskey or forks of it on the alternative fediverse. They tend to curate their experience through selectively blocking instances using fediblocking which serves as an instance-wide ignore function. Then there are your typical instances which can range from shitposters, channers and chuds which tend to not have any filters on the range of their speech. As such, you'll find these instances listed as "Alt Fedi" or your usual assortment of buzzwords listed as the reason for why they were blocked by that instance.
Mastodon is predominantly made up a minority of progressives that shout the loudest which left Twitter prior to Elon announcing his interest in purchasing the platform then later came in droves after he burnt it to the ground. They tend to be laughed at and mocked by the larger Fediverse for their tendency to equate that Mastodon equates to the entire Fediverse and their various attempts at trying to police the entirety of it rather than doing the sensible thing and keeping an allow list rather than a block list. Most notable of these attempts at policing the Fediverse has been the unified blocklist which is maintained by Oliphant of Oliphant.social, Seirdy of pleroma.envs.net, WelshPixie of Mastodon.art and a couple of other instances which make up the so-called 'Fedi council'. There has also been attempts by another individual beyond their clique at compiling a blocklist, namely the bad space which was bankrolled by begging on #mutualaid.#fedimeta, #mastodon, #soapbox, #misskey, #blocklist, #fediblock,
@Kezkch you deleted the original, to which I replied. So ill copy my reply here.
oh my god...it's gotten more right than wrong...
The main points that it got wrong are:
The "Mastodon Network". Nobody says that unless theyre shitposting or meming.
Dark Fedi isn't exclusively made up of non-Mastodon instances and are named as such specifically because what they post are not "within reason". Dark Fedi is just basically all the right wing propaganda, bigots, racists, transphobes, and pedophile instances. There are many mastodon instances among them.
My FAVORITE part that it got *absolutely* 1000% correct is almost the entirety of the last paragraph.
Those few that think they control Fedi are complete and utter shit stirrers and liars and they should be called out and known as such.
Pretty much summed it all up after someone asked what 'Big Mastosoc' was. The reason I made the distinction of calling Mastodon a network within the Fediverse is because it is what they call themselves, and most Mastodon instances tend to defer to the judgement of these precompiled blocklists effectively becoming one giant echo chamber.
The reason I included most instances that *aren't* Mastodon as being part of the 'alternative fediverse' is because you'll find no shortage of instances which fall on the fringes of political incorrectness which are fairly administered yet occasionally federate with 'the usual suspects'. Miruku.cafe is but one such example of that. Just because we don't have poa.st blacklisted doesn't make us fascists, nazis, bigots, etc, etc. That tends to be the attitude most Mastodon instances apply to those that are more permissive with whom they federate. Guilt by association.
Between that and targetting Pleroma as a platform for the belief that it is built for and by Nazis and Soapbox on account of its creator, it doesn't paint a very good image of Mastodon to those who do reside beyond their iron curtain.
