Also, sometimes the "job" queues are backed up, making posts take a longer time to propagate to other instances.

I have no filters or blocks. And I don't know where to check the filters/blocks of my instance, but the original post was perfectly visible on my instance, so there should be no limitations on the replies to it, right?
And besides that, I see this problem constantly. I get only a fraction of posts displayed when I visit someone's profile and I see only a fraction of replies to posts from profiles I follow.
Often it looks like I am the only person reading the posts. Very unsocial UX.BeAware :fediverse: repeated this. -

The instances your instance blocks are shown here https://freiburg.social/about
However, it definitely should show a direct reply to you, if you could see the OP on your instance...very weird.

BeAware :fediverse: (beaware@social.beaware.live)'s status on Tuesday, 27-Aug-2024 00:14:10 JST BeAware :fediverse: @ditol data is expensive and by follow relationships, I mean across your instance.
Also, boosts matter, that's more than likely why you only see a limited amount of posts. They were either boosted by someone on your instance or the posts are pinned to the users profile. Pinned posts seem to be held onto.
If person 1 on server A follows person 1 on server B, then any users also on server A will be able to see those posts.
Instances have the option to delete remote content after a set period of time to save data as well.
These things are all done to save data and keep costs low. If every instance grabbed every post and held onto them, Fedi wouldn't exist.

As to the need to be following: that doesn't really make sense, if I open a profile to get only some 5 random posts diplayed to me. Or none at all. An when opening a post, not to get all the other replies displayed to you. Maybe the topic I want to discuss has been discussed already, but I can only see it if I open the post on the original instance. This is ridiculous functionality. Or rather dysfunctionality.BeAware :fediverse: repeated this. -

Thanks, the other instance is not on the block/mute list of my instance either. So there is no obvious explanation. And again, it is such a soherent experience over the time that I am on mastodon, that I doubt it has something to do with the filters.
Btw., what does OP mean? (I am just a regular user, not a geek.)

Yes, I agree, exchanging data constantly without any need would very quickly overheat the whole network.
But wouldn't it be more intuitive to request, say, the recent 20 posts of a profile form another instance, when I (or any other user) access it and pull the followin 20 posts when I've scrolled to the bottom? And pull the replies, when I open a post? Thus, data is pulled only on request, but it is the entire data in question. -

Though, I am not a programmer and don't know how feasible this is, with the current protocol. However, AP is still in VERY active development.
Things can and will change.
