I go back and forth about cutting. I usually look at the person is active on Threads, Bluesky, or Twitter. If they are, I usually cut them (I am on an instance not federating with Threads at the moment). Most people don't have time to do what I do. I found the biggest drop offs were academics and journalists. Most went to Bluesky or returned to Twitter. I think the need to replicate networks is vital to both. But some inactive account do pop back to life sometimes!

Zeb Larson (zeblarson@hcommons.social)'s status on Monday, 26-Aug-2024 00:49:21 JST Zeb Larson In moving accounts last night, it's striking how many of my followers/follows were totally inactive. I cut my follow list in half last night, but not because I was looking to get rid of anybody: I just didn't see much point in following accounts that posted three times eighteen months ago and haven't since.
The Mastodon drop off was real, ya'll.
