@PeachySummer no really it looks like a massive fuckin' headache and apparently experienced Unix sysadmins have been exasperated with configuring anything related to email servers
I'm half wanting to fall into the rabbit hole for the meme but 2 years ago @dcc configured sendmail successfully and has never been the same since.
@PeachySummer@dcc tl;dr email is ancient and big tech has made sure it's as painful as possible to host a mail server due to their automated spam prevention policies 😄
but yea, it's not easy, but probably worth learning for young and upcoming sys admins. There's a lot of history there, buried in the SMTP protocol and all the things that have been bolted onto it over the years.
@kirby@PeachySummer@dcc Oh, and if your plan is to enable nyanide to send email confirmations for new account, you could just make a box on cock.li, fedora.email or whatever, and then just send them via SMTP. Cyberia does this.
@mint@dcc@PeachySummer nah it's more so wanting to use personal email for myself. i have a mailbox on nyanide.com that actually just bounces everything it receives to another email it's pointed to
would like to be able to send mail from that alias lol. The confirmation thing would more so be cherry on top if I get it right
@phnt@dcc@PeachySummer it's fine to just completely omit that for the first run right? I don't really care about spam right now because I haven't used any of my emails in a more public context
@kirby@dcc@PeachySummer Essentially yes. In the beginning you will be banging your head on your desk and after that it will mostly be a breeze.
There are some docker solutions (namely Mailcow, and the hell that fedora.email uses), but I abandoned those immediately when they failed to run on podman.
@kirby@dcc@PeachySummer You will he get spam anyway. Bots will scan your IP, perform a reverse DNS lookup, get your domain and spam the default addresses like webmaster, abuse,...
You can always set it up later if you want. But since you will need to setup dmarc and dkim anyway, it's better to also setup spamassassin. It's like a single change in postfix after dmarc/dkim and one sieve rule in dovecot.
