I like this. Have never vibed with the current logo much because it doesn't work great as a general purpose icon (mainly because of the multi colours it's always used with clash in many situations; but the mono treatment is fine).

@BeAware There are some objective issues with the current logo that make it impractical and sub-optimal in various scenarios. But I like it's spirit. It could use a few iterations to improve it on a practical level while maintaining it's vibe. The asterism has a few problems too - chief being it looks different depending on the font being used. It's not a replacement for a proper logo.

@BeAware one of the practical problems is with the luminance of the colours. A few iterations on the palette would probably help. Here's an example of a more rationally designed palette:

@BeAware Ah, I see what you mean. Different people from different backgrounds place varying importance on things like this. Some think the aesthetics, the brand, the vibe are important. While others think it less so. I'm somewhere in the middle. Brand recognition and the feelings evoked by that recognition are important, but so are other things too. I'd agree the logo isn't a priority right now - the seeming stagnation in Mastodon feature development is for me the biggest worry.
