    speaking at conferences is an important part of commercial and nonprofit tech. i havent seen a platform to make it easier - discovering events, schedules, managing calls for talk, discovering speakers. does something like this exist?

      @thisisaaronland @simon ha good point

      honestly i just want to see which events @tomcoates @mallory and I should be going to in the next 12 months.

      it's always a mix of being part of the conversation in communities you already engage in, and spreading the word to new audiences.

        Lanyrd
        Lanyrd (pronounced and named after "lanyard") was a conference directory website. It was created by Simon Willison and Natalie Downe and launched in 2010. The site was created while the couple were on honeymoon. The site compiled blog posts, photos and other coverage from events and keeps it organised by session and speaker. Users on the site were identified through the Twitter API and events were shown to users based on their contacts on Twitter. The company received $1.4 million in seed funding in September 2011, having participated in the Y Combinator startup incubator program. The company was based in the Old Street Roundabout area in London. In October 2011, Lanyrd launched an iOS app for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. To help attendees at the 2012 SXSW Interactive conference in Austin, Texas, Lanyrd launched a special site listing conference sessions and speakers, and letting individuals see which of their friends from Twitter were attending or speaking at the scheduled sessions. They also made the SXSW data available in the form of iPhone and mobile web apps. In addition, Lanyrd produced browser plugins for Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari...

      @evan We (LWN - @LWN) maintain an events calendar at https://lwn.net/Calendar/, with an associated call-for-proposals calendar at https://lwn.net/Calendar/Monthly/cfp/ . We're focused on the Linux and free-software worlds, but try to be fairly comprehensive within it.

      Federated Wiki exists because Evan came and talked about the inevitability of federation at an event in Portland, Oregon. Thank you Evan.

      @nemobis @evan Yup – pretalx is doing the CfP and scheduling part (including reviewing, speaker comms, and generally everything that would be a pain to do in a spreadsheet).

      We're not really doing discoverability, because pretalx can be self-hosted, so there are hundreds of instances around. Because there are so many platforms, and that's surely a good thing!, having the schedule and the discoverability be discrete things is probably a good thing tbh.

      @pretalx you can interest me in that! A quick Web search will find a lot of my work. I also have a book coming out from O'Reilly Media about ActivityPub, including a section on events:

      @evan can I interest you int he topic of contributing to open source software? 😉

      For real though: federation is hugely complex to build well and in a way that degrades gracefully and is intuitive to the user. Taking all that on, as a solo developer, while also building out pretalx, would probably do the project a disservice.

      Pretalx *does* have a plugin API though, so a federation plugin would be totally possible!

      @pretalx if you're really thinking about connecting installations, you could do worse than using AP. Let me know if you're interested and I can help.
