reading an entire encyclopedia can't be a good way to accomplish something :blobcatgooglynotlikethis:

@icedquinn I admire persistence and those capable of it, on any matter. Were you looking for anything in particular on the encyclopedia?

@cine no. just reading investopedia front to back :blobcatwaitwhat2:

@cine i end up there sometimes because it covers some math problems that come up.
i knew about geometric means because it was used in some image optimization papers. turns out quant bankers use it too

@icedquinn The website? I'm just seeing it. Well, if you read it please tell me if it has useful info. Investing sometimes sounds interesting, sometimes dull to me. I've put off learning about it for a long time.

@cine there are some mathematically competent traders out there. mostly the algorithmic/"quants" ones. they make up their own models of shit and trade that way.
some people do it by knowing how people work instead, i guess.

@icedquinn Hmm, I'm somewhat surprised. In my mind finance doesn't involve much math except for the crazy forecasting models that I assume use whatever cursed knowledge mathematicians have come up with in an effort to comprehend what's going on.
Then again I only know the very basics, and the most complex operation in them is coumpound interest.

@icedquinn this reminds me of the bots doing the same trades as some politicians did, and they were making a profit that way.

@cine insider trading is a hell of a thing.
the funniest one i saw was a guy using a bot to interpret when a pundit was up or down voting a stonk. he then used this to grade every blog post the pundits made. then graded them by which stonks they were most accurate about.
his algorithm was basically abusing sampling bias of a dozen bloggers

@cine i tinkered with writing a stonk bot but you need money for those to matter. also i prefer doing actual things. stonk trading is kind of pointless and shouldn't exist. :blobcatgoogly:
