@GossiTheDog why does every tech company think they can compete with Apple in the one thing they’re good at: overpriced, nice looking equipment that’s good enough to do the job
This is like the 4th Microsoft launch this decade that tried to go toe to toe with MacBooks on price and like the rest it’s going to fail because they don’t have the fruit on the clamshell
Nobody wants to pay $1200 for a surface, let alone something plastic with a Dell or HP logo, when the MacBook Air is 1099 and matches or outperforms

@sapphire @GossiTheDog @skylar This will be the case only if
a) Corporate legacy software gets recompiled for ARM
b) FEX64/Box64 gets good in tandem with hardware accelerators for x86_64 emulation
Linux on ARM is way more well-established and functional than Windows RT, so maybe there's more than a snowball's chance in hell of the YoLD happening (i.e. corps start porting their legacy software to ARM Linux so as not to get stuck as Apple exclusive nor deal with MS' ARM fumblings)

@Tadano @GossiTheDog @skylar @sapphire RT failed precisely due to arbitrary restrictions on running anything except whatever shit was in the M$ store, turning the system into a tablet-sized Windows Phone that for whatever reason still had the desktop mode you can't even use for anything. 10 and 11 have no such restriction, but I think M$ is still crippled with their exclusivity deal with Qualcomm for end-user devices.

@skylar @GossiTheDog also the future is ARM, give it 5 years you won't be able to buy an x86 laptop, in 10 desktops too

@sapphire @GossiTheDog power doesn't matter if it's apple silicon and all the business software is distributed as an x86 windows binary

@skylar @GossiTheDog I have a program on my macbook that runs those, like I can just double click an exe and it spins up

@skylar @GossiTheDog sure, but for the most part you're still sacrificing over a macbook, whether in power or in 30 second battery life
Again, I cannot stress enough how cool having a laptop that lasts as long as a phone is

@sapphire @GossiTheDog people are perfectly fine paying $2k to $3k for a high end laptop from Dell or HP's business line
but literally no one wants the dogshit microsoft has been pushing, from this AI nonsense to "we went and fucked with all the buttons and UI because fuck you that's why"

@mint @Tadano @GossiTheDog @skylar @sapphire put it this way a guy I know who wrote a blog about Windows RT and why he thought it would fail was that people would google how to run The Sims on Windows RT only to find it out cannot run Win32 apps. His post brought searches from people googling how to run The Sims on Windows RT.
The Sims will run on Windows ARM, that's the difference.
