Right. I was so entrenched in Solaris, working at Sun, that I didn't get into Linux until later. We used CDE until about that time, when we started switching over to GNOME.
CDE (based on Motif) was a step down from OpenWindows, but GNOME eventually got to be pretty good. I've never tried KDE.

@thanius if my wife didn't throw it away I have an old book on linux which had the Slackware distribution on cdrom.
