     @icedquinn I converted some cartoon PNGs to WEBP recently and was surprised that it worked perfectly and compressed down to 1/4 to 1/8 size.

     @sun probably got the lossless mode. the lossy mode does bad things to colors sometimes.

     @sun there is a lossless mode in webp and jxl. cjxl will default to this if you feed it certain images.
     
     i compress throwaway screenshots with whatever the defaults are to webp so it fills up the media server here slower. its just funny to meme on how badly it mangles some of the colors for seemingly no reason.

     @icedquinn I have a site I go to sometimes that has cosplayer image sets and they use webp to compress them and it looks fucking awful, I should look at what quality setting they use.

     @sun basically all of webp's useful lifecycle nobody really wanted to move to it, then AVIF and JXL come out, but AVIF has critical shittiness issues and JXL is unsupported due to politics, so everyone is having to shrug and roll out webp because god damn these jpegs and gifs take up so much space.

     @sun funny to me is that mozilla had jxl ready to ship and just refused to push the button. then they closed the ticket because google googled. apple shipped it live in the latest macs and now moz reopened the issue as "safari compatibility"
