I suspect it would be possible to implement support for this as a KWin plugin so that these applications would work. @AleixPol prototyped `ext-zones-v1` from @matk as a KWin plugin, I don't see a reason that `ext-image-copy-capture-v1` couldn't be done the same way. @Zamundaaa might disabuse me of that notion, though. 😛

Andri Yngvason (andriyngvason@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Aug-2024 23:15:45 JST Andri Yngvason @matt There is a bit of a schism between people who want Wayland protocols for window management and some of the other things that we used to have with X11 and the people who want those things done through software libraries or otherwise out-of-band.
But I don't think anyone's really stubborn about it. I think that if we just make really good software that uses this protocol, they'll give in.

Matt Campbell (matt@toot.cafe)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Aug-2024 23:15:46 JST Matt Campbell @andriyngvason @emersion @drakulix Unless I'm misunderstanding the blog post, it sounds like it's a foregone conclusion that this won't be adopted by Mutter or KWin? If that's correct, then why is that? Is there a schism between those big desktop environments on the one hand, and more niche Wayland compositors on the other?

Andri Yngvason (andriyngvason@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Aug-2024 23:15:47 JST Andri Yngvason With the help of @emersion , @drakulix and others, we now have a new screen capturing protocol for Wayland. I wrote a blog post about it here: https://andri.yngvason.is/making-a-wayland-screen-capturing-protocol.html
