With the help of @emersion , @drakulix and others, we now have a new screen capturing protocol for Wayland. I wrote a blog post about it here: https://andri.yngvason.is/making-a-wayland-screen-capturing-protocol.html

@matt There is a bit of a schism between people who want Wayland protocols for window management and some of the other things that we used to have with X11 and the people who want those things done through software libraries or otherwise out-of-band.

But I don't think anyone's really stubborn about it. I think that if we just make really good software that uses this protocol, they'll give in.
