tech.lgbt did the exact same thing (suspending without comment) to BQL and several other instances last year. We had made a post that we would be defederating from them due to a pattern of racist behavior that went unmoderated (or poorly moderated) as well as a moderator inciting a racist dogpile on Ro. We had a lot of community connections with them, so we announced a delay before the suspension would go through. Then one of their mods suspended us with no warning immediately following that announcement, claiming that it was for "safety".

Then after a lot of folks made a big stink about how that was a shitty thing to do, they made a public statement blaming one anonymous mod and reached out to us offering to reconnect any severed relationships. At that point, none of our users were interested so we said no.

I have to say, that instance was the most stressful defederation experience we have dealt with thus far, way more stressful than any number of Nazi instances. Why? Because white folks on other instances would constantly jump into conversations to defend tech.lgbt mods and argue with us about the racist treatment folks were experiencing from them.

Rarely have I had to suspend so many individual users as during that harassment wave. As you can see from this thread, we also had to suspend a number of other servers such as treehouse because their users and mods would take any of these conversations as an excuse to continue complaining about The Bad Space.

All that to say, that server is a mess. It's a shame they are so popular.
