@emanuele @louis I do noit have any additional information - nor do I have the ability at this time to audit audit the code. (I posted a question if anyone has independently audited the code.)

Point is: I am not certain that gathering search information is necessarily part of their telemetry codce... So I wouldn't make the assumption that the telemetry disabling option covers this until it is independently verified.

@emanuele @Unatributed I'm wondering if you deliberately spreading misinformation about Mozilla?

Drew Devault saw it coming already in 2020:
      https://drewdevault.com/2020/10/22/Firefox-the-embarassment-of-FOSS.html

Firefox is not 100% open source, it contains binary blobs for years.

Also: Mozilla doesn't rely on any donations for quite a while. They are funded by Google et al to implement their search per default and sell advertisement in form of pre-installed bookmarks and search bar recommendations.

      > The majority of Mozilla Corporation’s revenue is from royalties earned through Firefox web browser search partnerships and distribution deals around the world.

Also: they state it very clearly on their website that they harvest your search behaviour.

      From their own website:

      > Firefox sends Mozilla what you **type into the search bar and Mozilla may share that data with its partners**.

      > We also share aggregated data about the sponsored content you see and click with our third-party ad platform Kevel so advertisers can see how many people click on their articles.

Not sure how all that publicly available information aligns with your statements.

@Unatributed @louis they understood they will not survive by only relying on donations and providing a web browser. But their products are open and a lot of fork have been created (you could switch to any of those and I suggest you trying them).

@emanuele @louis Just to be clear... I am not looking for a "different story". When things that are this controversial come to light I tend to look for independent verification, and in this case specific implementation details.

It's only through complete fact based information that we (the general public) can be completely informed. I prefer this over taking actions based on incomplete information.

@Unatributed @louis I do understand your point and I like your approach to things but their telemetry functionality is not something new and it's pretty well documented (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/telemetry-clientid). What we discovered today is that they are open to explore new business with some privacy in mind. But neither this is something new: I can see the Mozilla Foundation testing new business over the last years (file sharing service, VPN service, anti-spam mail relay and so on...).

@Unatributed @louis I do understand your point but I am not aware of any different story so far. Mozilla has a Matrix instance for the community: https://chat.mozilla.org/ maybe you could ask there and some people with more insight than me/you can give us an answer on this topic.

@louis @Unatributed Louis, I know about Mozilla fundings and they went that path since the donation one, as used to be in the past, did not work.

The data input on the search bar and sent to partners are part of the Firefox Suggest functionality which can be deactivated as well (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-suggest). That's not something shady imho.

As I told before, users can choose to use any other Firefox fork on the market if they don't trust the Mozilla Foundation (I am using Librewolf myself).
