i still kind of feel like i have lost all respect for pirate software over "don't make games direct to e-waste" is "bad actually"
i'm sure he had a more reasonable take than i'm thinking so i should probably go review it again but uhhh
idk rossman is also a dongus at times but usually not about this

@icedquinn somebody in the comments on one of the many videos about this pointed out that one of his games uses steam achievements to gate game progression in a single player game as an anti piracy method so he's architected himself into a situation where he's highly dependent on live services and ripping it all out would be a hassle.

@sun yes the professional biases are a thing. rossman runs repair companies so you can argue that his right to repair is just self interested rhetoric.
thor effectively runs a media company with a side business of selling 1.5 indie games, so it's also in his professional self interest to have a bad take (rage bait marketing) but also genuinely be opposed to it (because he would be one of the bougies inconvenienced)
i haven't seen his direct quotes so he might very well been not as much of a dongus as i feel he is being. he did kind of opine that there should be a lot more pointed definition of specific practices, which isn't entirely shitter, but sort of feels like kind of a weird thing to be speaking out against

@icedquinn I've seen video of him banning people from his twitch for being "wrong" when politely disagreeing with him and apparently he deleted a rossman comment from his video, he sounds like a dickhead

@sun i liked him at first but his social engineering credentials put a hard cap on that.
i am unable to feel positive things for silver tongue devils for i know this is their weapon

@icedquinn yeah someone said he is doing like you say, trying to stir shit up for engagement

@sun mostly he just says a lot of generic follow your dreams shit interspersed with some personal experience barely working in the game industry (he was a tester for blizard he wasn't deep production)

@sun for the valorant hack he was actually pretty measured; telling people to hold the phone on calling out a cloudstrike level RCE until people checked in to it.
it looks like he was right for that, since the remote code exploit looked a lot more like a couple of high profile streamers were targeted

@sun rossman is deffo speaking in alignment with his businesses its just that his personal interest happens to align with what is good for society in this case

@icedquinn he doesn't seem stupid or anything and he certainly must know what he's talking about but he doesn't see that the industry moved into the paradigm it's currently in for reasons that aren't aligned with customers so there's no reason customers should take his side on it.

@sun i am also not super interested in compelling behavior with laws. i think people should be using soft power for this.
unfortunately they are using soft power instead for.. very stupid reasons.

@icedquinn yeah I don't want laws for it either, at the very least the law will fuck it up in some way and leave us with unintended outcomes that nobody likes

@icedquinn I didn't write it down but also some game he used as an example actually had a hidden "offline" mode for QA testing lol

@sun that's not unusual. EA claimed sim city couldn't run offline, total biscuit made an ass of himself trying to downplay that. "say what you want about this it really works!!" it had been cracked an hour before he published, and the crack was basically "online = no" in the startup ini file.
the only thing ea cloud did was store saves but they tried to muddy the waters about it maybe doing cloud compute to make up for slow computers (it did not, they lobotomized the city model instead)
escape from tarkov is another scam artist for the ball crushers. they said buy the lifetime package and get all updates. then they said pve mode "isn't dlc" because "we wanted it not to be that" and then pivoted to "actually the pve mode costs too much in server fees" so they are charging a paid upgrade for something a free mod more or less did for them already.
like idk i just don't play games (sadly did buy EFT but, rip.) made by shitheads.

@sun legally safe thing to do would probably be just to revoke all DRM laws.

@icedquinn my first exposure to the guy was a reel of him smugly talking about his time at Blizzard, while trying (and failing) to make it look like he's just sharing something interesting rather than simply showing off
It was a weird vibe. I was kind of surprised to later learn he's got a proper following and everything
