Modern #technology will never be as cool as a vintage faux-#WoodGrain alarm clock with a built-in lamp.

nus (nus@mstdn.social)'s status on Saturday, 10-Aug-2024 00:57:40 JST nus @icedquinn @Jessica is that a brand name one? I have a knock-off, and I kind of hate it. Mostly because I need to grip it with my whole hand to push any button on it, including the "shut up" button

nus (nus@mstdn.social)'s status on Saturday, 10-Aug-2024 01:01:59 JST nus @icedquinn @Jessica now that's the kind of thing I worry about. Didn't Phillip's design those things ONLY a couple decades ago? I don't want to hear about them ever breaking... They need to be eternal

iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Saturday, 10-Aug-2024 01:26:32 JST iced depresso @nus @Jessica well the light alarms are meant to make the room bright. instead of going :neocat_scream: :neofox_scream: :drgn_scream: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA it slowly raises the light. the person i gave it to sleeps in a little room without a window to the outside.
some people like to use the light to just light the room too, which wears it out faster.
the units are really well liked its just kind of a bruh that the lamps still wear out (can't remember last time i saw an led light burn out? maybe on my usb hub?) and they don't replace them (but, well, lumie does.) -

nus (nus@mstdn.social)'s status on Saturday, 10-Aug-2024 01:26:33 JST nus @icedquinn @Jessica buttons on top. Absolute genius.
I don't care as much if the bulbs burn out if the rest of the clock keeps functioning, I guess the light thing is nice but I usually sleep facing away from it which kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?

nus (nus@mstdn.social)'s status on Saturday, 10-Aug-2024 01:31:55 JST nus @Jessica @icedquinn I don't think I mentioned it in this thread, but a constant horror of those apps is that if your phone reboots, such as for an unplanned update, no apps are loaded until you unlock it. So if you're sleeping ... No dice.
I think, at that point, the only alarm clock that could run is the one that's built into the system.

Jessica's new Main (jessica@kitsunes.club)'s status on Saturday, 10-Aug-2024 01:31:56 JST Jessica's new Main @icedquinn@blob.cat @nus@mstdn.social my alarm clock app i bought has an internet radio option which is super helpful since eventually I'll get numb to the sound and sleep through it. the alarm clock app also forces me to walk across the house to scan an NFC tag to stop it

iced depresso (icedquinn@blob.cat)'s status on Saturday, 10-Aug-2024 01:38:52 JST iced depresso @nus @Jessica android was designed originally by palmos folk, for power users, before "security" copes became the excuse to make everything shit.
the system was designed with permissions and the intent system for the express purpose of being able to replace programs such as the alarm clock. -

nus (nus@mstdn.social)'s status on Saturday, 10-Aug-2024 01:38:53 JST nus @icedquinn @Jessica it's a problem because of a conflagration of features, I think.
The auto rebooting is something I wish it would just stop, but I understand why it would try to choose a time that I was not actively using my phone
And not loading apps until you unlock the phone, is a huge security feature that I can't compel myself to hate, even if it frustrates me. It could help quite a few people out in a bind, if all they need to do is hold the power button until their phone reboots
