Reminder: X, Meta, Google, and IBEC, lobbied against solutions to their dangerous algorithms.

@newt @johnnyryan Western regimes use algorithm virality to create uprisings in foreign countries and to manufacture consent domestically. I realize governments aren't a monolith but considering that they lost control of the populace via large media company propaganda outlets like in the past I really wonder if they will be willing to give up this tool.

wrt UK riots, they are bad but I am not sure that we have more, or bigger riots like this now compared to the past before the Internet? These things happen because unaddressed anger (right or wrong) reaches a breaking point.

I am also against The Algorithm because I think it amplifies bad things, but I am very cynical about everything surrounding this.

@johnnyryan also reminder: Governments are pushing generalised diet of lies and fear into peoples TVs and news sites to remain in power. This is great for the politicians' personal gains and elections, but destructive to society.

Also reminder: Big Tech’s dangerous algorithms are pushing a personalised diet of lies and fear into peoples feeds to make money. This is great for the companies’ shareholder value, but destructive to society.

@sun @newt As you say, unrest has a long history.

Technology and how it is used has played a role in that history.

@johnnyryan @newt well I do agree with you that algorithms promote bad things and are incentivized by profit over responsibility.
