The other time I was at the Royal Albert Hall was in 1983, working a computer which I’d programmed to automate the scoring of the Miss World competition that year. It was a project that had required me to meet Eric Morley and go through with him the precise operation of the judging procedure. And then there was the work with Thames TV engineers and the Epson company to interface one of their CP/M computers to the TV standard so my results could be overlaid on the nation’s TV screens live.

I remember looking down from the highest circle on the musicians rehearsing that night’s Prom. And then my colleague took me up on the roof outside for lunch and literally poached me for the much bigger company he was going to join. It was audacious but frankly one of the best moves I’ve ever made.
