     @niconiconi @lamp it writes the files to free space and then adds a "layer" on the old one. some cd software in the day could show you all the layers (since they're always there anyway.)

     @lamp@kitty.haus It's like Git. Old records can't be updated but you can burn new records to override them, very common knowledge (back in the day of Windows XP...)

     The UDF format allows pretending that a DVD-R is RW by burning a record that x files are "deleted" and burning the newest version.
