   All week, I’ve been warning that A.I. might not be the moneymaker that the current tech hype cycle says it will be.

   Investors are now getting wise to the hype cycle and are punishing Microsoft, Google, and Amazon as a result.

   If the likes of Microsoft are going to put dramatic expenditures into their data centres – all while saying it’s to ride the A.I. revolution – people want to see results.

   Again, I’m not saying that A.I. is a bubble. But with things changing as abruptly as they are today, there is little appetite for high expenditures with the promise of far-off returns.

     @atomicpoet I keep hoping for a burst. Just the environmental impacts of the energy use... Not to mention people losing their jobs and replaced by a bot that makes stuff up...

     @giflian I don’t hope for a burst. I hope for reasonable expectations.

     The idea that, within a year, A.I. will make a good feature length animated movie based on a one sentence text prompt is ridiculous.

     There are legitimately good uses for A.I., but the tech industry needs their hype cycles in order to justify high valuations that promise substantial growth.
