but still my emergency OS is linux boot recovery image or whatever it's called, luckily i managed to overcome my skill issue and haven't had to use in years
@hj I had a second Linux install as an emergency. SSDs are so cheap lately that when I need to redo my distro, I just buy another. So it leaves the older one as an emergency
However, it looks like the possible hardware issue is also heavily affecting the older install that's barely been touched in a while. Which is why it seems like it's very likely a hardware issue
Windows isn't as affected. The mouse is still a tad choppy there, but I can at least watch anime without it freezing every second
@coolboymew this kinda makes me feel better about myself because I'm MOSTLY on the same $HOME as i was back in 2012 or so. Only time i had "second linux install" is when i migrated from debian to manjaro to arch and i never really used it.
Quite the contrast to 2008 when i tried ubuntu and tried to have wobbly windows and failed because nvidia and X11 fucking up and no second computer to fix it
i mean, basically every time i do a "major upgrade" on my "main PC" i salvage the rest of the components to make another PC, sorta. If there isn't enough components i use my savings to get what i'm missing. The second generation of this shit i send towards my literal brothers, together with some unused electronics.
i have my NAS which is just an embeddwed I1900JC or whatever the fuck embedded celeron mobo and an 8x SATA card from aliexpress or sumshit and a nice silverstone nas case. Shit just works over NFS, better than my previous JBOD setup (rip LabZero) that constantly had stale file handle errors
sorry i'm i'm not coherent i just had like 4 liters of beer and it's 4am
@coolboymew@mrsaturday it's fucking shit, nearly all of my computers in same room and i'm actually considering getting an AC next year because it's quite bad to say the least. I mean on a day when it's +20 outside it's probably +25 in the "lain room" aka gooncave (and also bedroom because it has poor ventilation)
@hj It seems like turning a PC into a NAS is more than a few programs, it's a whole ass OS it seems
Nvm, my plan was probably retarded. Altho' I probably just need simple samba shares that are fast enough to open the files from them directly and simple raids or scripts that runs and copy that files to other HDDs, I'd be happy with something that simple
@coolboymew nah man, you can just run any OS that can do whatever the fuck network share file protocol that suits you. I mean my first was literal JBOD with debian and NFS exports because it's the fastests and lowest latency (compared to CIFS/SMB/Samba), then it was FreeNAS (FreeBSD but still NFS) and then TrueNAS COCK (same shit but linux)
@coolboymew@mrsaturday yah but in actual sauna you get +70~100 unless your a pussy like andrej tate and have a """""""""""""""""""""""""""""sauna""""" at fucking +50°C but the thing is, you get the contrast between +90°C sauna and then runing into snow/cold shower/cold-ish air and it's so fucking nice but then it's so fucking cold you get back into sauna and repeat the cycle (until you run out of electricity bill)
which makes hot summers kinda shit because there's less contrast and also you get the half-assed sauna... pretty much everywhere, really. image.png
@hj Well, my idea would have been to have a simple NAS program running in the background, or hell, it could just be a raid with some samba shares, I need nothing fancy honestly, and then I could use the machine as a MAME machine at the same time, and for whatever else I could think to host on it. So it's not just an arcade taking space in a corner
@coolboymew well, you PROBABLY could get away with it with TrueNAS
back in FreeNAS days i was like "hey can a nigga have some [sound card drivers]" and most search results were like "bruh it's a server no we don't do that shit in this neighborhood we don't care about your AC'97" maybe it's better with linux, i kinda hated the FreeBSD era of it (don't tell Feld), but the best you can get from TrueNAS is docker/kubernetes containers. Back in FreeNAS it was FreeBSD jails and it was SHIT. Docker is still SHIT but at least i can get info about it online. FreeBSD is literal OS/2 Warp tier shit.
I'm practically falling asleep right now but
typically you want NAS to be a separate machine that JUST does NAS and maybe torrents and that's about it, mostly because nearly everything else is gonna depend on it so you want that shit online 24/7 and ready also 24/7. You don't wanna that shit LAG when you're watching a movie streamed to your shitbox kodi, i had that shit with shitty ass router and bad fuckin i don't even remember what it was. Sure you can have a fucking Windows 2000 machine with samba share and also fuckton of garbage running in background + mame but then you'll fucking feel it when you tryna use it as source for your movies and animes and shit.
@coolboymew@eric ZFS is just a filesystem, nothing more, nothing less. You can use it on your desktop if you want. It is nice but doesn't give you NAS out of box.
@coolboymew@hj If you just want to watch videos or whatever from you computer you can probably just install Jellyfin and leave it running in the background
