   One of the state's functions is to create a looming specter of state-sponsored violence over all human relations and interactions. Ignoring this specter can be harmful or actively dangerous (especially to vulnerable folks), but also the only way to hold onto our humanity is to construct relations and contexts where we -can- ignore it.

   This problem underpins a lot of the conflicts I see in progressive-lefty circles I think. I don't think there's an easy solution.

     For example: I say "god this song sucks".

     What I mean is "I don't like this song, I find it irritating and unpleasant to listen to, and I want to casually complain about this feeling".

     But instead this telephones all the way to "People who like this song are bad people who don't deserve rights" when someone else's relationship with me isn't secure enough.

     The solution is _not_ we all talk like the second example. Among other reasons, it's ESL-unfriendly and also fucking exhausting.
