I am so tired of Tech Solutionism that sees every social issue as something to be fixed with software. I support Timnit's plea here. People claiming keyword filters or blocking is all you need to fix this issue is worse than naive, it's dangerous as it places the burden on the person being attacked. As a privileged old white man, I face none of this. But I can at least support those being attacked and call out this bankrupt and lazy ass thinking. https://dair-community.social/@timnitGebru/112865318944123670
@scottjenson Just hearing about all this and then going to read the replies on DAIR itself has been so stressful for me. I can't imagine how tired and unhappy they must feel to always have to deal with this stuff. It sucks even worse to know that the Mastodon app is itself making the problem worse for them in a bunch of ways.
You're right though, my mind always goes to "what feature could fix this" first. Totally unhelpful here.
@scottjenson Yeah. I definitely saw several examples of that, and in too many cases they got mean-spirited and retaliatory when told their suggestions weren't helpful.
@ironchamber Well, there are things people have discussed that could be implemented (I'm not the person to enumerate them) so there ARE things we can do. But it's the assumption that the existing tools are sufficient that is the biggest belief that must go.
