@sickburnbro Literal nigger-tier thinking.
"Food doesn't come from farms, it comes from supermarkets."

@Dr_Enwurd_Nigma @TrevorGoodchild it shows a lack of critical thinking that GDP doesn't measure criticalness of a product.
They literally think "if something is important, it will be expensive!"

Isn't food production generally quite subsidized in the west, meaning that it is intentionally cheap?

@Jens_Rasmussen @Dr_Enwurd_Nigma @TrevorGoodchild there are subsidies yes, but I don't think GDP-wise it would somehow make it grow for 0.6% to like 5%, so it's not relevant. When you look at GDP it was ~$25 Trillion. so 0.6% is 150 billion. I could believe the subsidizes for food might add 50 billion in value, but then that takes it to what? 0.8% of GDP?

@Dr_Enwurd_Nigma @TrevorGoodchild @sickburnbro No, he was being a bit more literal than that...

@sickburnbro @Jens_Rasmussen @Dr_Enwurd_Nigma GDP is a meaningless metric in a nation that has the exorbitant privilege of printing the world's reserve fiat currency (for now)

@TrevorGoodchild @Jens_Rasmussen @Dr_Enwurd_Nigma because GDP includes government spending, when the purse is wide open because you can make the world pay for it, it is very silly indeed.

What’s the GDP of everyone starves to death?

There's a lot of these type of things, they're really under-appreciated, except for when you don't have them.
Another good example is machine tools. A rounding error in the economy, but the moment you lose the capability to make weapons you're getting invaded.

@cjd @s2208 I think this is the same question of "how do you compute ROI on a capex where there is a 50% of the regime exploding and then the next honcho nationalizes our stuff because we had to grease the skids with this slimeball to get them to play ball"

How do you compute ROI on an investment that's either:
1. Too cheap to be profitable, or
3. Society is fucking collapsing.
Market economies have no answer to this, in every country, governments step in and "national security priority" them so they can be funded out of tax money ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Paleface @TrevorGoodchild @Jens_Rasmussen @Dr_Enwurd_Nigma GDP by itself is not a harmful metric. The problem is when it became a target rather than a simple calculation.

I've been saying this for a long time: after we win any attempt to calculate GDP will be a capital offense.
