On that #firefox feature that a lot of people are getting very upset about at the moment. Without even getting into the whole differentially private aggregation thing,

this is only going to affect someone in the first place if they (1) don't have adblock on and (2) click on the ad? like, in the case when their privacy is fucked already and AFAICT all #mozilla does is to make it slightly less fucked?

@ignaloidas @gsuberland @jaseg there's some guy on fedi that got a letter response from some eu bureaucrat when asking about adblocker-blockers that, if true, would seem to indicate that basically any cookie at all would be tracking personal data.

I happen to think he's full of shit (and a letter from a middle manager isn't law) but it seems to indicate what policy people think...

@gsuberland@chaos.social @jaseg@chaos.social cross-site attribution of conversions, i.e. the thing GDPR says you need consent for when cookies are involvedThis is false. GDPR says you need consent for personally identifiable data. Cross-site attribution with traditional methods, when tracking from server-side, requires identification cookies. This method does not send any personally identifiable data, due to the protocol ensuring the aggregation of the data.

@jaseg it's a JS API that records ad impressions and conversions (the caller is entirely arbitrary, doesn't have to be part of a script that would be blocked by adblock) which provides cross-site attribution of conversions, i.e. the thing GDPR says you need consent for when cookies are involved. the impression may come from a page with sponsored content (e.g. a review) rather than direct display ads, for example. the conversion may be on any e-commerce site.

@sun@shitposter.world @gsuberland@chaos.social @jaseg@chaos.social There is some nuance to this for the record - if you unavoidably need some information to run the service, it does not need permission. It's when it's used for extra purposes when you need permission.

@ignaloidas @gsuberland @jaseg somehow the people were arguing that a video site's purpose is to play videos not play ads so detecting ads not playing was extra datamining. I'm just mentioning it because it seems like a big implied regulation overreach. but I don't want to derail your thread so sorry if so.
