翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Monday, 15-Jul-2024 17:30:17 JST 翠星石 @mangeurdenuage @idiot IPv6 addresses that contain MAC addresses have long been depreciated for privacy reasons - any standards-compliant IPv6 implementation generates entirely random privacy addresses.
It's only really mobiles and routers running proprietary software that still shove the MAC address into the address - but that's expected from devices that don't respect the users freedom.
On GNU/Linux-libre, you can set it up so that a new random IPv6 address is generated every 10 minutes, or even for every single request (although that many addresses makes some crappy network cards break) and if that computer is on another network with other computers doing the same thing, it becomes pretty much impossible to tie an address to a particular computer.
Most IP tracking software seems to be designed around the concept of "single ip's" and so collaborating addresses in a /64, a /56 or even a /48 pretty much requires manual operation - many invidious hosts have found out that if each client gets its own /128 out of a /64, then google doesn't end up blocking the instance - as it seems google doesn't want to risk the possible collateral damage of blocking a /64 (plus you can just go to the next /64 in a /48), or a /56 or a /48.-

>they might be fingerprinting hosts based on IPv6 address, probably the EUI-64 part the contains the MAC address
