@neil Advertising is not in Thunderbird's vocabulary, and we're never going to profit on your data (much less collect it in a way that we *could* profit on it).

Also: an important distinction about Thunderbird is that it's run by MZLA Technologies Corporation, a wholly-owned and completely autonomous subsidiary of Mozilla Foundation (not Mozilla Corporation).

@jens @joey @neil You're encouraged to do so, then. Break out whatever you need. It's open source, you can audit it.

But don't twist my words to fit your preconceived expectations.

@joey @killyourfm @neil I could break out wireshark to verify, but "won't collect your data in a way we could profit from" and "won't collect your data" are very, very different things.

@killyourfm @neil Then why collect it, tho.

@jens @joey @neil No, Thunderbird collects limited data about your installation of Thunderbird, not about you.

And SOME basic telemetry is necessary for developers to make a better product.

(Btw, you haven't linked to any Thunderbird repos yet...)

I'm done discussing this. Have a nice day.

@killyourfm @joey @neil ... a bunch of other uses, where more data could be collected.

      I'll stop here, though.

Because it's very clear from a quick glance that I did not, in fact, twist words: Thunderbird collects data about me.

And the question remains, why collect it, then?

There is no ethical telemetry under capitalism.

@killyourfm @joey @neil But in case I am accused of twisting words more, Thurnderbird source code documents that it sends telemetry via Glean, as documented here: https://github.com/mozilla/releases-comm-central/blob/7d077663ca8d49a2645907e1da82214cb2e96090/docs/telemetry/index.md?plain=1#L2

With more details on Glean here: https://github.com/mozilla/releases-comm-central/blob/7d077663ca8d49a2645907e1da82214cb2e96090/docs/telemetry/index.md?plain=1#L2

The basic telemetry configuration collects things like the size of your mail box and how many accounts you have configured. It's not particularly invasive at first glance: https://github.com/mozilla/releases-comm-central/blob/7d077663ca8d49a2645907e1da82214cb2e96090/mail/metrics.yaml

When you search the source for "telemetry", you find...

@killyourfm @joey @neil I'm not twisting your words to anything. I'm just reading them as they are.

In this day and age, if you value your user's privacy, it's useful to phrase these things carefully.
