   I took a deep dive on my favorites since my time on #mastodon

   I noticed that many old images from just a year or two ago are broken. The further back in time you go, the more images are broken.

   Toots from 2018-2019 contained mostly broken images that are no longer viewable.

   Just a heads up. Much of that old media is gone, and many of those older smaller instances are gone as well.

   A shame.

     @BeAware - I don't know what goes on behind the scenes of being an instance admin, but I was always curious how Mastodon handled media. Is media solely stored on the original instance's servers?

     But, if the media is lost, the text of the toots remains, so I assume redudant copies of the toots (minus the media) exist?
