   I took a deep dive on my favorites since my time on #mastodon

   I noticed that many old images from just a year or two ago are broken. The further back in time you go, the more images are broken.

   Toots from 2018-2019 contained mostly broken images that are no longer viewable.

   Just a heads up. Much of that old media is gone, and many of those older smaller instances are gone as well.

   A shame.

     @galacticstone data costs money. Individuals can't hold onto everything forever without donations. I struggle every month to pay the bills, but I can't really expect anyone to help because I'm running my own instance and nobody else is here but me.🤷♂️

     @BeAware - I don't know what goes on behind the scenes of being an instance admin, but I was always curious how Mastodon handled media. Is media solely stored on the original instance's servers?

     But, if the media is lost, the text of the toots remains, so I assume redudant copies of the toots (minus the media) exist?

     @galacticstone well...everything is nuanced, friend. Posts that aren't "local" are only cached. It does take up the same amount of storage however.

     Also, a LOT of Fedi instances use block storage, which costs money per GB, per month. So non-local posts and media that's attached are sometimes cleared for space and money.

     Though, not ALL Fedi instances clear it all the time, including .social because I guess they want to preserve Fedi as much as they canx
