I still find it funny that some people debate about switching from Windows to GNU/Linux and one of their argument to not do it is that latter "requires tweaking in the system" like dude what the fuck are you talking about it’s the same thing on Windows but instead you need to remove bloat

@vertka Also Windows users be editing undocumented variables in the registry and whatnot to get rid of annoyances while Unixes have that stuff in documented text files and that's when somehow the configuration tools in GUIs do not work.

@vertka@suya.place Just get a distro you like and no tweaking of the system is required.

@dushman @adiz @vertka I'm a little hesitant about recommending Mint these days for newcomers but I often still reach for it for want of a better option.

Mint is just Ubuntu without the bullshit so I'd always recommend that instead.

@dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest I don't have any real issues with Gnome (it's what I'm using right now). I'm productive with it and it's stable/functional. It's especially good, I find, for laptops---notably, those with 2-in-1 functionality.

I am not a fan of whatsoever of Ubuntu nor Snaps. However, this conversation was regarding introducing normies away from Windows/macOS. I do not use Ubuntu, but Ubuntu was my first Linux experience years and years ago. It's still a safe bet for getting one's feet wet. @vertka@suya.place

I never recommend Ubuntu to anyone. The snap situation is a pain and GNOME is like the worst DE known to man.

@dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest Mint, Tumbleweed, Ubuntu, PopOS, Fedora...really, any of these mostly come ready to go out of the box post-installation. Show them how to download software from one of the "stores" like Gnome Software or KDE Discover. Set it up so that they're just downloading Flatpacks. There's not much there that can go wrong or break. @vertka@suya.place

You can use something like Mint without even changing any configs at all. I got a couple of friends to switch over to Linux after modern Windows pissed them off lol.

@dushman @adiz @vertka ironically the reason I stopped using it was support for newer hardware lol, need something pretty much bleeding edge now but I'm not comfy with rolling release model so I use fedora (well, actually ultramarine)

Yeah that makes sense. Debian derivs are not really an option if you're on very new hardware.

@adiz @vertka @dushman I did for a little bit, it's good but the defaults for things like the aforementioned snapper didn't exactly gel with my taste and there were some strange oversights with things like OBS Studio having bugs and missing functionality that I haven't seen on any other distro
