@Shebeencounter They seem to have always intended it to be temporary, but between Manchin and their own annoyance at its reception, it seems to be dead for good. Like a lot of good policy, it simply needed more time.

Biden's approval rating has been net negative since September 2021. (This has often been blamed on the Afghanistan withdrawal but his numbers were slipping steadily already, starting in March.) His standing versus Trump hasn't really changed much in all this time either. And I get there might be a certain degree of resentment on the part of Biden and his team, that they worked so hard and got nothing for it. But to be fair, aside from COVID relief, they worked on the wrong things.

"I'm going to be the Infrastructure President and show Trump how it's done" probably sounded good in Biden's head but most Americans were incredulous, especially as the effects would take a long time to manifest and Manchin and Sinema routinely humiliated him.
And the good things Biden and Democrats did like expanding the safety net all expired while Americans are still struggling with an economy Biden insisted was "great."

@gwynnion do they ever even bring up the Child Tax Credit any more? That was like the single greatest policy of the last half century and I feel like it's gone AWOL from the conversation.

It's not that I'm not scared of Trump and Project 2025. It's that the writing has been on the wall since before Biden's inauguration and he's been acting like he's a normal president in a normal time with normal problems and not the guy supposedly standing between us and political armageddon.

If Biden loses, I think there's a case to be made that he blew it in his first year in office, not because he did so much he didn't get credit for but because he didn't do anything to stop Trump and alter this country's political trajectory.
The baffled and helpless reaction to Dobbs in 2022 probably buried Biden for good. While people turned out for Democrats in the midterms because of abortion, I doubt it does Biden any good because he's been AWOL on the subject.
