Brownfield housing targets finally. Interesting to hear of "greybelt" as a newly defined term by Labour, but def a clever way to nibble into nimbys.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Monday, 08-Jul-2024 19:39:50 JST CJ Bellwether Anneliese Dodds and Bridget Phillipson both stated to be in place for the Women and Equalities Ministerial role.
Positive, both pro-trans/pro-LGBTQIA+

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Monday, 08-Jul-2024 19:41:21 JST CJ Bellwether tho this seemed almost a forgone conclusion, as there are no anti-LGBTQIA+ women in the cabinet so unless they were going to parachute another peer in.
But still, a welcome sight.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Monday, 08-Jul-2024 19:44:26 JST CJ Bellwether "A spokesperson for the department told the BBC that both MPs will hold the post, but that more information on how that works in practice would be announced in “due course.”
They also suggested the title of the posts could change but that a final decision has not been made."
Sounds suspiciously like Labour may be harkening back to Harman in 2010 when they were discussing that the ministerial position is too important to be pushed into a sub category to be handled by one person who is also full time on another.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Monday, 08-Jul-2024 20:48:36 JST CJ Bellwether @quantum Yeah. Definitely not duffield, that would be a catastrophe.
I'd personally agree with her on the incongruence assessment in so far as that right now, if there is to be movement forwards around GRCs, it has to be done incrementally considering how toxic and anti-GRA reform the publics perception has become. And right now the stalemate has to be broken if the discussion is to move on.
If they can chuck the hidden panel entirely in exchange for just a diagnosis thats a significant step. I'm interested to hear the actual details on that proposal - ie if someone has a diagnosis already from over 2 years ago, what does that mean for them etc. But if its approached in good faith with an aim to actually improving trans lives it could be huge.

Cas (quantum@mathstodon.xyz)'s status on Monday, 08-Jul-2024 20:48:38 JST Cas @siege Dodds is far from the worst choice (I was worried they were going to give it to Duffield) but I think it's a bit disingenuous to call her pro-trans. She's still of the opinion that a diagnosis of dysphoria is necessary for a GRC, so I doubt we'll see much improvement there. I'm also not forgetting Keir's comments on side-rooms.
Imho, we're at best set for a few more years of the status quo ante bellum. No more open hatred, but no real progress on trans rights or improvements in healthcare. Don't get me wrong, that's still better than the alternative, but it's nothing to celebrate.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Monday, 08-Jul-2024 20:52:06 JST CJ Bellwether @quantum im just aware that unbiased polling showed in 2016 the UK public had 58% in favour of trans people having GRCs, and now its barely above 20%.
For Labour to be putting forward any sort of positive GRA reform is equivalent of pushing a boulder up a hill that is also a minefield.
