As far as I know there weren't state laws changed to make this happen; it's been this way for a long time. So literally the DNC (and GOP) have been sleepwalking their hand-picked candidates (pretend the Primary matters if it makes you sleep better) into elections because they didn't think it would be possible that their patsy could be too old, too ill, or too unqualified.
@feld I mean you know the answer, they are not so stupid that this snuck up on them. They did it to destroy challenges to their weak incumbent. what's the alternative explanation that doesn't assume completely unrealistic incompetence at every level.
I'm digging through historical Wisconsin state statutes and the June 1st 5pm cutoff has existed since at least 1967. Previous to that the entire election section appears to have been rewritten / reorganized and I'm having trouble finding the equivalent to S8.15.1
speaking of that, Wisconsin used to have even MORE progressive voting laws than we do today. It used to be illegal to make laborers work during the afternoon of an election in a first-class city
@sun you have to consider that one of the pillars of the old organized labor revolution was almost spontaneously founded in Wisconsin and movements later spread from there. I'm sure some laws were enacted over time that later were chipped away at.
