@alainamartin They don't want companies selling their data, posts, etc. Or using it to train AI.
Though, there's over 25,000 Fediverse instances, so make no mistake, this place IS fully public and there's no way to tell who is reading your public posts at any time. If you want something to stay relatively "private" then set your post to followers only or just don't post it on Fedi.
@BeAware AI is one of the reasons I came here and censorship! So will AI come here eventually like big corporations? I mean people can still use it but a lot of companies have been integrating AI search and it’s taking away from creators and business owners!
Servers that use Cloudflare for protection, like mine, have the option to have Cloudflare automatically block all AI bots. I have it enabled.
Cloudflare has written how some AI companies attempt to look like the Google bot, and others, so as to get around the blocks, but that they aren't fooling Cloudflare and they do get blocked.
I don't know what other instances are doing to deal with this.
However, as you say, you can never be certain that an instance is using cloudflare or if they are using it, can't be sure that they're using this new feature.
Alaina, to your question, we just don't know if a company is already using Fediverse data to train AI.
There's lots of folks, including myself, that try to keep track of such things, but due to the vastness of Fedi, it'll never be a sure thing.
It's one of the biggest issues, in my opinion. People get banned and "silenced" (it's literally called silence in the admin panel) all the time from the bigger instances like the one you're on.
However, as long as you don't post anything *too* wild, I think you'll be okay. Lately, the topic that seems to get banned a lot is genocide, depending on which side you're on, of course.😬 Pro Palestine aren't doing so well apparently.
I tend to be very tame and not discuss such topics. However, I don't deny that they are issues that need to be discussed and debated. It's the only way things can change.
@alainamartin@Jerry Well, tbh I have a custom style for my instance that is different from OG Mastodon, but if I remember correctly it goes like this:
Click your profile
Next to your name click the "..."
Click Preferences
Click Account on the left hand side
Then "Migrate account to a different instance" should be on that page. But, you first need to have an account on another instance and click the opposite option on that account, "Move from another instance" and you'll setup something called an "alias" then do the steps mentioned previously.
Sorry, I said it backwards but I'm sure you'll get it. I had ADHD and things get out of order sometimes.😬
@Andres@Jerry@alainamartin They were defederated for like...30 minutes? And AFAICT it wasn't a full block, as there weren't any follow relationships severed.🤷♂️
1. Seems some people have decided that the ActivityPub protocol was created only for the purpose of connecting non-corporate social media together. I never saw evidence that this was a design principle, but they believe it.
2. Fear that advertising will somehow come into the Fediverse.
3. Unwillingness to connect to the people who use Threads because they associate with billionaires and corporations by using their software. Their kind just isn't welcome here.
4. Meta will come for our servers, steal personal information, overwhelm our servers and leave us with a pile of burning hardware. mastodon.social, so far, seems to be doing fine.
BTW, everything in the Fediverse is in clear text, and you don't need to follow people to read their stuff. No doubt Facebook, and other corporates, and governments, have been reading everything already.
Generally, they feel in their heart that supporting Threads is supporting evil. That people who use Threads are therefore supporting evil. I've gotten plenty of nasty responses because I don't block Threads on my server. There's even a list of servers that refuse to block Threads so those fighting the evil can defederate from Threads-connected servers.
You'll find a lot of anger from some when suggesting that people on Threads be followed on the Fediverse.
@alainamartin@Andres@Jerry Threads has their blocklist public. "Defederated" means "blocked" in Fediverse terms because technically it can be worked around by moving to a different website.
I *think* they are suggesting that mastodon.social is doing okay because they were blocked by Threads, which Threads is seen as a bad place due to the things written above by Jerry. However, Mastodon.social (your instance) only appeared on their blocklist for about 30 minutes before they were removed. So, even if he didn't mean it that way, his point isn't really valid anymore because there's no block in place currently.
@Andres@BeAware@Jerry I see you are on peertube too! Do you like it? I wanted to join them but they don’t have a app and I didn’t know how to find them 😅
I'm mostly trying the software, peertube is very nice for long videos, you can follow any :peertube: user using your account, no need to "join" every software on the :fediverse:
Whenever you create an account on a Peertube instance, you'll get a username that looks like @username@website.com and anyone could take that full username and put it into a Fediverse instance search bar and the profile will show up. However, for content to start flowing, a follow relationship between accounts has to be made somewhere first.
So if you want to see peertube content from a specific creator, you type their peertube username, like I listed above, in the mastodon search bar and then follow them.
Then, any future videos will come through on your home timeline.
However, if content isn't "pulled" you should be able to input a direct peertube video link into the search bar as well, pulling the content directly to you.
