i am going to watch FLCL: Shoegaze as it airs on September 30th at midnight on Toonami with commercials and i will like it, and i do not care what any hopelessly-recursive fanbase has to say about it -- OK?!

forrest (buru5@mstdn.games)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Jul-2024 16:20:40 JST forrest i used to think i had all these complicated nuanced reasons for disliking stuff; as i thought about it more it became obvious that i just didn't want to like stuff: the thing was too new, it wasn't similar to other stuff i believed i had complicated nuanced reasons to like, or certain groups/people i didn't like for what i believed were complicated nuanced reasons liked it so (of course) i couldn't like it. it's superficial cooties tier stuff.
got good reasons? if not, you may be missing out

forrest (buru5@mstdn.games)'s status on Wednesday, 03-Jul-2024 20:55:02 JST forrest @NaClKnight that's a great question. and a hard question, too. i'll try to tackle it, although my answer will likely be insufficient.
unconstructive negativity. genuinely offensive. "obvious" cash grab. low effort (vague, have to work on this one). critique that doesn't understand what it's critiquing. real personal preference that isn't tainted by the aspects mentioned in the previous post (music example: i seem to have a preference for certain time signatures and chord arrangements).

NaClKnight (naclknight@mstdn.games)'s status on Thursday, 04-Jul-2024 00:47:40 JST NaClKnight @buru5 Hmm, ok i think i see what criteria you're looking at. No critique is objective but it looks like you're trying to reasons or parts of the media itself instead of extra-textual reasons.
If we're only talking anime, world building and its effect on character development and fights also fit my criteria: stories where magic is rare or extremely powerful tend to lack the team/squad dynamic i prefer in favor of singularly powerful (main) characters
Now I'm considering my "good reasons"

forrest (buru5@mstdn.games)'s status on Thursday, 04-Jul-2024 00:56:18 JST forrest "good reasons," bit of a loaded phrase, huh? my fault. lol.
your good reasons can be literally anything you want, obviously; but i would challenge things like, "well it looks dumb" or "that's a reddit anime lawl" or, idk if you're following me, anything that doesn't have a real concrete reasoning.
if you can't articulate why you dislike something beyond these superficial levels, then it's probably not a "good reason."

NaClKnight (naclknight@mstdn.games)'s status on Thursday, 04-Jul-2024 01:07:53 JST NaClKnight @buru5 No, i totally follow you. I've definitely had these conversations with @AllKeysGDS and @ojou and others
I think understanding why i don't like something is instructive in shaping future tastes rather than trying shows blindly.
"Isekai are dumb" is much different/less useful than "I haven't enjoyed shows that center a power fantasy" or "i don't like the dynamic of one male MC and multiple semi-romantic female companions" or "this show didn't offer anything different than [previous show]"
