   Another random data digression. In converting my personal archives into Web Stuff™, one of my priorities was conference presentations and recorded talks — for several years most of the visible output of my work came in the form of public talks I delivered at industry conferences, talking about techniques, case studies, and lessons learned.

   Ignoring private client events and training workshops, it comes to over a hundred talks across 17 years or so.

     The tricky part is that about half the talks are permutations of each other: a talk delivered in four versions to different audiences, or a talk delivered five times over the course of a decade as best practices evolved and new approaches were ironed out.

     I've settled on a compromise for tidiness: selecting one canonical version of each preservation-worthy talk, and noting the additional times/places that *other versions* of the talk were delivered.

     Not a huge deal, but something to untangle.

     The absolute completist in me wants to preserve each variation, which is theoretically possible but realistically not worth the work. And many of the oldest talks really have aged poorly — kludgy thrown-together slides with content that's focused on technical challenges that haven't existed for a decade.

     So, interesting to note they happened, but not terribly useful. Choices, choices.

     @eaton I am delighted to see you evaluating your public works!

     I feel like a lot of my public works over the last 5 years were (1) one big paper and (2) a million public emails.

     So, in that spirit, I wonder what the next five years get to be for me. At least an LL.M. thesis on cybercrime, cybersecurity, international law and 'the law of unintended consequences' but ??

     Even when you're evaluating your own work, the innate pessimist highlights the shortcomings -- even as the opportunities are *right there* too.
