There's a non-zero number of folks who think things should just *work* and are confused by the different instance approach with regards to defederation and moderation. Those are the folks they are targeting.

It seems less like they're trying to pull from the fediverse, as much as they're targeting people on a few large instances (who are also likely to be the least savvy ones).
It also neutralizes the promise of decentralization by centralizing users on a few large instances (see, they are just like us).
