It seems like one of those things where it's going to happen *to* you without any permission — the only "opt out" you have is to not get benefit from it yourself. Like how you can "opt out" of TSA biometrics.
When my phone got back from repair it had come with an unasked for upgrade to Android 13. Well, OK. So the first things I do are run through and turn off the "double tap to go to lock screen when phone is turned off" feature, the "Assistant button on lock screen" feature, and the feature to show a popup when you copy something… I then find that the double tap on lock screen, assistant on lock, and popup on copy features were all still happening anyway. I didn't used to hate Google, but now I do.
Hey, question. I'm getting notifications from Google asking me to add my new (or effectively new, post-wipe) phone to the "Find My Device network". This is confusing to me because I can open up Google Find My Device and it can *see* the device, now, as is, and ping it and stuff. So what's this screen? Is this exclusively about the secondary network where it's tracking the locations of Bluetooth devices and other phones will tattle on my location when the cell modem is off? Cuz I don't want that
@joeo10@mattdm But I want Find My Device? I just don't want Google tracking me or my shit through means other than me choosing to have my phone report its own location through Find My Device
@mcc@joeo10@mattdm oh, ok. I get those *after* turning on the main FMD switch. What a terrible UI to hide that there are more (unavailable) settings if FMD is on.
@JLab8@joeo10@mattdm This is what I get in 13. I believe the top switch is "normal Find My Device" and the bottom switch is "Bluetooth snitch network". No, I don't think these buttons are labeled well.
@mcc@joeo10@mattdm 12, but I definitely got notified about this new network (but maybe it was on the web?) Either way Google directed me back to my phone settings where the only option is to fully disable FMD.
@joeo10@mcc@mattdm weird, I've only got "find my device" in my settings menu and no way to opt out of offline tracking. Not in the web privacy interface, either. Gross.
