    So, you make a controller for PC.

    You control PC with mouse or touchpad.

    You can't put anything mouse-like on a controller.

    Touchpad therefore must be the only choice.

    But instead of this yet another manufacturer suggests to use sticks, which is nearly as useless as thinkpad nipple.

      @a1ba To be fair, the touchpads on the first one sucked for most games, as they were interpreted like sticks, making most games borderline unplayable. Portal and Portal 2 were absolutely great with it, though. So in lieu of developers probably not optimising for them, I can understand that decision.

      @a1ba @mpldr Meanwhile the one thing I don't like about the Steam Controller is the lack of proper d-pad and straining your thumb if you need to use X/Y/A/B frequently (or holding it).
      (And annoyingly a lot of games don't allow rebinding gamepad controls as freely as keyboard/mouse games)

      @mpldr on gamepads it's fine for games that require mouse (because not all games actually support gamepads). It's also quite comfortable for shooters.

      @a1ba @mpldr @lanodan fortunately in steaminput you can rebind to arbitrary controller buttons iirc. the icons on the game will be wrong tho.

      still would be happier if steaminput worked without being logged in to an account though.

      @a1ba @mpldr Yeah, and quite the same for the Valve Index, except d-pad but like you get 2 buttons, 1 trigger, 1 small thumb-touchpad, 1 fingers touchpad, 1 joystick per handle. (And the buttons seem touch-sensitive as well somehow)

      I think Valve quite learned from it, which makes me wonder if we'd get a V2 of the Steam Controller, I feel like touchpads where they put the grip buttons could work to then get an otherwise regular controller.

      @a1ba @mpldr @lanodan openxr does similar things. i used to shitpost about normalizing that as an input.

      I would really like to use Steam Input but I wouldn't because linking to steamapi is... uhh. no.

      @a1ba @icedquinn @mpldr Well there's also things like xboxdrv which effectively grabs the gamepad and creates another one in userspace, but then the in-game buttons can only be wrong.
