People of the #fediverse, I am going to setup a new personal instance server for just myself and a small group of folks. Are we still happy with #mastodon or is #pleroma best suited? I have experience with Mastodon and know what that is like, not sure of Pleroma.

Grayson (grayson@thepage.house)'s status on Wednesday, 10-Jul-2024 08:53:37 JST Grayson @bss @draft13 yeah, the resource requirement differences were one reason I didn't do Mastodon. Another was the bits and moving parts were reduced compared to Mastodon which matters in terms of keeping your instance updated and running.
The things that I think work in Mastodon's favor were that it had a better interaction with kbin/lemmy and it can talk to Threads if that's something you value. Akkoma seems to be able to get posts and follow accounts, but it doesn't seem to send anything (as of a day or two ago when I last did a spot check with another boardgamer). Everything else has been fine in terms of interoperability.clacke@libranet.de is my main likes this. -

bss, super genius (bss@ill.moe)'s status on Wednesday, 10-Jul-2024 08:53:45 JST bss, super genius @grayson @draft13 I cannot directly compare as I picked Pleroma over Mastodon for resource/technology reasons and never really looked back, but I'd say I'm satisfied with my similarly-small instance which basically just keeps chugging along without issues. I haven't engaged with the Pleroma project much, but the software is good for my purposes, and their IRC support channel is decent. Elixir is nice but I haven't had cause to make significant local changes yet.

Grayson (grayson@thepage.house)'s status on Wednesday, 10-Jul-2024 08:53:46 JST Grayson @draft13 if you're considering Pleroma, you could also argue that Akkoma is an option as it forked off a few years ago. In fairness, speaking with @bss who (still) runs Pleroma might be insightful as well.
